Evaluation E

Provide an Evaluation of the product you created for Unit 5. You may refer in your response to such things as the suitability of your product for its intended audience, its technical quality and its aesthetic quality

Discuss your product in light of the objectives outlined in your treatment.

In my treatment I set out to inform my audience about issues that or not to do solely with games but other things such as health  / lifestyle and bullying with girl gamers, I did this so I could come away from the stereotypical gaming magazines that are on the market, and I wanted to offer the real gamers audience that I targeted something new. I also succeeded in keeping some aspects of a normal gaming magazine with a top 5 countdown of games, this will drag in the gaming audience that I need and then hopefully they will read into other articles that I am going to have in the product that are not stereotypically gaming related.

A few things that I didn’t succeed in consist of keeping the house style throughout my magazine, the house style that I set myself was to have the main image and masthead of the article on one page and then place the article and sub images on the other page. The reason I did not carry this idea through was because of the fact that it did not look like a magazine double page spread at all, it looked more like the layout of a book, which is why I had to change the layout to make it look more like a magazine, and also I thought that if I kept the same layout throughout my product the audience would get bored of it and then move on.

If my product was a real commercial product it would probably not survive, the reason for this being the genre of the magazine which is gaming with a bit of lifestyle involved in it; I think this is because there is only a small amount of people that the product could appeal to as there is only a hand full of people that actually do both gaming and keep fit, otherwise they are complete opposite genres, there just wouldn’tt be a big enough following to keep the product stable and therefore I would not generate enough sales.

The cover price for my product was £2.00 and the total sales estimate that I set was 5,000, when creating these sales estimates I thought that it would be a realistic target to set myself, but when you think about it realistically there is only a handful of people that the product could appeal to and a lot of them wont make it an priority to go out and buy my product.

Discuss your projects real appeal to your target audience.

The feedback that I received of my target audience was a mixture of both negative and positives, which is good as it leaves my product room for improvement. An example of things that they likes could be the stylistics of my front cover such as the Dpad in the ‘o’ of my masthead, they said the banner was very appealing, the font that I chose reflects the genre of the magazine which is a good thing because then my audience would be able to gather a good idea about the genre of my magazine just by looking at my masthead, they also complimented the branding on my front cover as the main colour of the front cover relates to the main article in the product, they then went on to say that my sell lines were placed well.
They had just as many negatives about the same page as positives, they said the main image lacks colour which I believe would be a problem if the other colours on the page were not as eye catching, there is too much blank space which may be a problem as my audience may not be impressed with the amount of content in the product. There is too much green on the front cover which again could be a problem, along with the pink the audience may get confused at who the product is aimed at which could result in a lack of sales. An overuse of stroke could be a bit hard on the eye, although I believe it helps the colour stand out more and easier to read, the stoke makes the product look to repetitive.

The negatives that my audience addressed during the feedback stage would have to be addressed in that I would have to change some of the elements that they picked out, these elements will be the blank space, to fix this I will add more sell lines on my front cover as this will give the audience an idea of the content in my product and so they get the feel that there is a lot more in the product compared to what there is now. The fact there is too much green on the page will have to be addressed in that I will possibly change some of the sell lines to the secondary colour that is on my front cover which is pink, at the same time though because my product is primarily targeted at males I am trying to keep it as masculine as possible which is hard with a main feature like ‘Girl Gamer’

The overuse of stoke means that I will either have to tone it down a bit or get rid of it completely, I would rather just tone it back a bit as I believe that the stroke allows the colour to stand out more on the colorless background and also make the text easier to read. I am going to add another smaller image at the bottom of the page for another article that is featured in my product to stop the front cover from being too repetitive.

I believe that the product that I have created will appeal to the tribes I outlines which are ‘real gamers’, ‘nerds’ and also ‘sports junkies’ the reason I believe it would appeal to them is because the gaming factor of the product will obviously appeal to real gamers and nerds because stereotypically they find video games interesting and I believe the content in my product would keep them reading, the sports junkie tribe would be able to relate to the lifestyle aspect of the product as I believe it has good content in it such as keeping a healthy lifestyle while gaming which may also help them pick up a new hobby.
For the contents page that I created there was a lot more negatives than positives, which told me that it needed to be redone all together. An example of some of the positives that I was given was good color scheme, I think the reason they said this was because of the fact that the light green can be related to gaming, as it resembles the same colour on the Xbox especially on the black background. The other good point they made was the good stylistics on the page which is the space invader images around the top of the page, again the reason they said this is because they are semantically related to gaming so it allows the audience to know what the genre of the magazine is when they turn to that page.

The socioeconomic groups that I outlined were B, C1 and C2, the reason I believe my product would appeal to them is because, recently gaming has become a very expensive hobby to keep up with, such as games and consoles cost a lot of money these days so I would have to target groups which would be able to keep up with the magazines content financially. Another reason I targeted these groups was because from audience research I found that the majority of my audience would be in these groups.

With my product I targeted both genders, especially with this issue as the main feature is about girl gamers which means that my secondary audience could consist of females which is quite unusual for a gaming magazine and that could relate to my unique selling point. The main gender that I targeted was males though as males are stereotypically more interested in video games than females.

Discuss your projects technical weaknesses and strengths.

Photography - There was no problems with the images that I used although some of the images that I originally took had problems with them such as the photos being out of focus or the model being on the wrong side of the frame.

This example on the left from my ‘Gaming Lifestyle’ article is very clearly out of focus which meant that I had to take the photo again many times because I could not take the risk of all of my photos being out of focus especially if they are the same shot.
Some of the images from my photo shoots were poorly framed with the model either being too far too the left or the right when they were meant to be in the middle of the frame, this was one of the easier problems to correct as you could see straight away on the camera if they were poorly framed so I was able to take the photos again straight after.

Writing - For the writing in my articles I tried to keep the same narrative voice throughout to try and keep a house style and so the audience would be able to bond with the magazine opposed to having a different narrative voice for example having an upbeat article and then a depressing narrative voice in the next article, I also tried to keep the same stylistics throughout as this again would help the audience identify this as ‘Control’ magazine.  The only difference in writing was the length of the articles that I wrote. Once that I had created my bible I had an idea of how big the article could be because I had the layout for each article in mind.

The good moments of writing in my product were definitely in the ‘Top 5 Greatest Games of 2013’ article as I had a lot more information to work with form when I was doing the article research for that one, on the other hand when I was doing the article research for the ‘Girl Gamer’ article all of the information was quite repetitive which made the article a lot more time consuming that the other two.
For example these two double page spreads have totally different layouts which will change the length of the article, Another factor that will change the length is the amount of information that each article would need to be an effective article and in this case ‘The 5 Greatest Games of 2013’ needed the most information as I needed to include a through evaluation of every game included.

The ‘Girl Gamer’ article on the other hand only had one aim, which was to defeat negative stereotypes about girl gamers so once I had done enough for to support my argument I could conclude the article and also I did not have much room to write place the article in.

Layouts deployed - Originally there was going to be a house style employed but I had to get rid of that idea because I didn’t want my product to be too repetitive as I feel that my audience would have quickly gotten bored if I had a similar layout throughout my product. The text to image ratio that I applied at the start of the production was correct although it did differ depending on the article, but the text ratio was never under 50.

The way I used palettes in my product again differed on the article and who it was primarily aimed at, the girl gamer uses a much more feminine palette as I was trying to create this feminine effect to try and draw in a secondary female audience.  The layouts I used in my product were generally quite busy especially with ‘The Greatest Games of 2013’ article as there wasn’t a blank spot on the page really, I feel this will help my audience relate to it as it is a young audience and they are generally quite upbeat and hyperactive. Also with this article I decided against using the normal column layout and went for using boxes instead as I had to separate everything on the page and give each game its own space for an analysis opposed to the analyst’s clashing and the risk of the audience getting confused.

Evaluation D

Evaluation D

During the production of my product there were things that helped make it easier to create from the pre production stage, the planning stage and the production/ post production stages. One of the helpful things I did was create planning documents such as the contingency plans that I created, these actually came into play when my models did not show up to my photo shoot twice, when I had booked them in a busy schedule, the first time I did not refer to my contingency plan which I should have done because it would have made it easier for the second time round, but the third time I made sure my model knew where to go and what time to be there because that was the last chance really that I had to get the photo shoot right.

Another helpful document that I created was the article plans that I created during the planning stage, this was helpful because when it came to writing the articles for my product I had already done the research that I needed to do to create an effective article, this helped speed up the article creations because I already had material that I could revolve my article around. Other stages that became helpful were from the pre production stage of creation such as exploring innovative products that were in the same genre as my product, this helped me because not only did it give me inspiration for layout designs in my product but it helped me see what was not in their products which allowed me to see what gaps in the market were so that I could create a product unlike any other on the market.

Other stages from the pre production stage were conducting quality audience research and also testing my product on the target audience, these two stages were extremely helpful in the creation of my product because it allowed me to see what my audience thought of my product so far and what they would do differently to it to make it more effective for them the target audience. Because this audience is who my product is for it needs to be exactly what they want to see so these stages helped that as it gave my audience the chance to alter my product and to tell me how I could improve it to suit them.

Although a lot of things did go well with my production there was also a lot of things that proved to be a challenge for me when they went wrong in the three stages such as in the planning stage where a few things went wrong such as creating budgets and equipment hire successfully, the reason this went a bit against me was because of the fact that I was trying to keep up with other products on the market that use high quality material for their front covers so I had to this otherwise I feel my product wouldn’t have looked as high quality next to other on the market, this ended up with my product being quite costly due to the amount of personnel and equipment needed for the product.

Another problem was the photo shoot plans that I created, they were not very detailed, so going into the photo shoot I knew the photos that I wanted to take but there were not many photos which did not give me a lot of choice during the actual production of the product, so I ended up using every shot that I took during photo shoots even if I didn’t like them or didn’t think they were very effective.
The flat plans that I created were a bit rushed which meant that I could not make them very effective which is why my final product does not really match my flat plans, but I feel this is a good thing because had I followed my flat plans the product would not turn out as well as it has, but if I had took more time with my flat plans I do think that my product would have turned out slightly better as I would have had more time to think of clever and effective ideas.

My schedule was very helpful at times when I needed to know what work to do for when, but at other times when I missed out on doing a piece of work for a certain time it began to build up, and this put more work on my back which resulted in some planning documents being rushed and not done to the potential that I would have liked them to be done, the only reason I could fix this would be to give myself more time during the schedule which sadly was not possible as I had a deadline to meet that could not be stretched.

The most costly error on my part was managing my models during the photo shoot stage, it took me three times to eventually get the photo shoot done, the first time my model was ill which was totally out of my hands which meant I had to reschedule, the second time was a mix up with times which was poor management on my behalf, and the third time went smoothly, had I got the photo shoot done in original time slot I think I would have had more time to create the product and make the layout of the certain double page spread a lot more effective to my target audience.

There is a lot of things that would have made the production a lot easier for me the big one being had a planned ahead for my model and made sure I would meet them at the right time and the right place. Another thing I should have done is completed my planning documents a lot earlier than what I did as this would have gave me more time to research a lot more which would have resulted in my product being more effective.

Another thing I should have done would be to have looked at more professional products and get inspiration from their layouts, these are professional products and that means that they are a high quality which meant that if I followed them it would have made my product more high quality.

And lastly a thing I wish I had done more of was getting reference material for my photo shoot, going into my photo shoots I knew which pictures I needed to get but like I said there were not many shots which meant that I had to use almost all the shots that I had to take even the bad ones, I feel gathering more reference material would not only give me more shots to use but also give me a more professional looking product.

Evaluation C

Evaluation C

The products that I am going to compare my product with are Edge Magazine, Games Master, Xbox the official magazine and the Northern Echo, most of these products fit into the same genre as mine which is gaming, and the Northern Echo is my client and they have the same audience as my product.

Edge Magazine is similar to product in terms of gaming content, which is why I chose to compare my product to this one, the content in our magazine a reasonably similar, how we are both talking about different platforms and not just focusing on one such as PC or Playstation. Our audiences are also very similar although Edge has a much wider audience as they are targeting all of the UK whereas I am only targeting the North East as my client is the Northern Echo which means I am working for them with this product, another difference with our audiences is because my product is also a lifestyle magazine, which helps people learn how to improve their style of life in ways such as health or learning more about society so my secondary audience is people who want to improve their lifestyle which is very different from the stereotypical audience who Edge target.

The institution that makes Edge is called Future PLC, they are renowned in the UK for publishing more than 180 magazines in fields such as gaming and technology, this is the Institution I chose to market my product because as well as Edge magazine they also produce other magazines in my genre such as Games Master and Xbox the official magazine which are products I will discuss later. The reason I chose this company to market my product was because of the fact that they have a lot of experience in this field and the products they have marketed in this field have all been relatively successful which tells me that they will be able to make my product successful as well.

Another product I am comparing mine with is Games Master, this is similar to Edge magazine in the way I am comparing mine with it, it covers all platforms with its content like Edge does, but another reason I am comparing it is because of the audience that it targets, I believe the audience is a bit younger than Edge because of the content in the two products, for example Edge seems to get more technical with terminology and articles, whereas Games Master likes to keep their content more simple with reviews and countdown etcetera. The reason I am looking at this product is so I can deliver the right content for my age groups and be more like Edge than Games Master.

Games Master is also market by Future PLC which is again helpful for me because that is the same institution that I chose to market my product. Another reason I want to compare this product with my own is because I believe it is a lot more friendly towards its audience than ‘Edge’ and ‘Xbox official magazine’ because these magazines are a lot more technical in their fields and therefore lose touch with the audience, Games Master creates a good relationship with its audience which is what I am trying to do while delivering high quality content.

The last Magazine I am comparing mine to is ’Xbox the official magazine’ the reason I chose this is because I wanted to compare my product to one that only focuses on one platform. The target audience in this will be slightly different to any others I have discussed so far as they are bound to be Xbox users compared to the likes of ’Edge’ who’s audience could be users of any platforms and obviously this will drastically change the content in the product.

The reason I am comparing my product to this one is because it strictly only considers the Xbox platform, and I want to see if this results in a better level of content because they don’t have to take any other platforms into consideration which could mean that they focus more on the Xbox platform which results in better content, I believe my comparing my product to this I could look at their level of content and therefore create a product that has a effective content.

The final product that I am comparing mine to is the Northern Echo, the reason I am comparing it to this is because they are my client which means I will targeting the same audience that they target. The Northern Echo have to maintain a good relationship with their readers so that they keep on buying their product, which means I need to maintain a good relationship with the audience. By comparing my product to the Northern Echo and taking some of the aspects that makes them so friendly towards their audience I think I would be able to create and effective product.

My product needs to be almost exactly the same as the Northern Echo in the way that it approaches topics, audiences and subjects and by comparing my product to them I will be able to do that which will allow my audience to treat my product exactly the same way that they treat the Northern Echo.

Content

The Northern Echo gets a lot of content from things such as specialised journalist, technology and social networking facilities. Specialised journalists are experienced in creating articles and have a lot of qualifications to do so, they know where to go and where to look for stories and how to get the breaking news before anyone else which helps create content that is of a high level of quality and also content that you will not find anywhere else.

I believe if I had a specialised journalist working on my products not only would I have had a higher level of quality in my article I would have had more effective article ideas to write about and include in my product, as their experience shows that they wrote great articles about a wide variety of subjects and made them interesting which will help draw a wide audience in.

They can also get their content from feedback from their readers, such as if someone informs them on a story they were not aware of, or if they get updated on a story through their readers they will be able to put it in the next issue and therefore they have more content.
Even the people who pay them for their content are helping them find more content which is a very effective cycle for the Northern Echo to follow. If I had the opportunity to get feedback from my readers I believe it would help me like it helped the Northern Echo in that it would not only give me new stories but it would also help me to improve my product to make it more reader friendly thus bringing in a bigger audience.

They get a lot of their content through contacts. The Northern Echo are bound to have contacts all over the region informing them on either updates with current or past stories or even informing them on new stories in the North East, which helps them get new content for the next newspaper, and if it is a big story it will help bring in bigger audiences.

If I had contacts like these it would help me give my audience higher quality content because it would be more up to date as these contacts would inform as soon as a new update or a new story broke, and I believe by giving this type of content to my audience it would help to create a strong relationship with my audience and possibly bring in bigger audiences.

Social networking facilities are possibly one of the strongest ways that the Northern Echo are able to get their content, for example as soon as one story breaks or is rumoured on a social networking site such as Twitter then all of News stations and newspapers are all over it and trying to cover it and trying to get their coverage out to the region first.

If I was able to do this I think it would help me to create a better relationship with my reader as they would get coverage of a story as and when it breaks hopefully before anyone else which would help bring in wider audiences because they would not be able to get this information and coverage anywhere else.

Structure

The odd numbered pages in my product are possible the most important because we have been taught to read from left to right our whole life, so it is important to make the odd numbered pages look slightly more attractive to the audience than the even number pages in my product. For example in all of my article there is not a lot of text on the odd numbered page compared to the even number pages, I believe if there was a lot of text the the audience would be overwhelmed by it all and not want to read on.

Most of the stories in my magazine are featured on the front page so that the audience know what is included in the magazine so they can decide whether to buy it or not, the stories that or not featured on the front page are therefore featured in the contents page where everything in the magazine is revealed to the reader. Obviously in Newspapers there is not a contents page as usually the front page acts as the contents page for the main stories for example ‘more on page 4’ which is a phrase that usually appears on the front page of a newspaper.

In some of the professional products that I have looked at there cover stories and features are usually placed in the middle of the magazine, I believe this is so people flick through some of the regulars so that the magazine can try and build reliable audience that will come back for each as they enjoy reading the regulars and the features. In my product all of the features are placed  in the middle of the magazine although it is only a small product, so they could be easily mistaken for being at the front of the product.

There is a lot of advertising in magazines, sometimes the audience can be reading an advertisement and not even notice it because the magazines semantic field could be related to the advertisement, for example advertisements of football boots in football magazines are so detailed they differ from the stereotypical advert that you would expect to see. Although usually adverts are placed at the front of magazines, my adverts consistently run through the whole product and they are evenly spread out throughout the whole product.

The magazines I am comparing my product to are much longer than my product there differ between 50- 100 pages each, which is much more than what my product contains. The only thing missing from my product is a few regulars, other than that there isn’t a lot that is missing, there just isn’t enough content in the magazine, so if there was more features and stories involved I believe that I would have a much more effective product.

Code and Conventions

In my product there is a quite  wide variety of story types used, they consist of a list which is a countdown of the greatest games of 2013, an interview with a young man who fits keeping a healthy lifestyle and gaming into his schedule which helps my audience possibly have a window to their future self, and also an informative article about the ordeal girll gamers face because of stereotypes.

The length of the article’s are the same throughout each of my article, which is about 500 words, this is so my audience don’t get overwhelmed by a lot of text and will want to read the article opposed to reading a long article and getting bored. The text to image ratio is also the same in my articles which is about 50:50 again this creates a good impression on my audience as they are a young audience and I know that young people do not like to read long articles otherwise they get bored.

The imagery I have used have different convention in each article in my ‘Gaming Lifestyle’ article I think the imagery in there acts as a window to their future self, this is because the article is about fitting keep fit and gaming and how you can do both, so you don’t have to pick one, and hopefully my audience will look at the imagery or the model as a window to their future self.

In my ‘Girl Gamer’ article there is evidence of metaphorical evidence, the image is of the model reaching for a gaming controller instead of make up, which is obviously different from what the audience would expect to see but I believe that is a positive thing because it makes the audience think about the subject of the story and realise that they are no different to the male audience that I am targeting with this product.

The introduction to the articles in my product are relatively the same they are all descriptive of what I will talk about in the article and what will be covered, this allows the audience to realise if they want to read on and if the introduction is wrote correctly then they usually do read on. There is also evidence of a question introduction in the ‘Girl Gamer’ article, this also tries to make the audience read on because it asks them a question that they won’t have a good response to unless they read this article.

I have tried to use the three colour palette rule with all of my articles with colours that relate to the article semantically, such as in the ‘Girl Gamer’ article it was pink, black and white and in the ‘Gaming Lifestyle’ article it was white, blue and grey. Keeping this three colour palette rule helps to keep the article neat and tidy whilst not having an explosion of colour on the page which can make the article layout look messy and not organised.

I used three columns in all of my articles to keep the layout of each article neat and tidy and so that the audience does not get overwhelmed by all the text on the page. In my ‘Top 5 Games of 2013’ article I have created a profile for each game I talk about, but I have done it in such a way that it fits in with the three column that I have on each article so it kind of has a tile effect throughout the article.

Technology

Obviously if I had professional photographers working for me my product would have turned our better and more effective, for example they have access to better cameras such as Cannon D20, which is a better camera than the SLR that I used, and if I had this my photograph quality would have turned out a lot better. They would also have access to a wider selection of lenses which would have gave me the opportunity to be more create with the lens selection during the photography part of production which would have created a more effective product.

If I had better models, the photograph would have also turned out better and the audience would get the message that each photo is trying to portray a lot easier, the same with make up and costume designers, they would help portray the message each photo was trying to portray.

Explain how the following affected your production and the processes that you followed to complete your product.
What could/couldn’t you do? What subjects/stories matter could you include? What subject/stories matter couldn’t you include? What processes did you follow ensure compliance with the code?
Libel
This is when a piece of defamation becomes published it is libel, this affected my product in that I was not allowed to publish anything negative or controversial either about a business or individual, it also meant that I could not publish a story which main topic is how bad a company is etc. The way I avoided this was by being careful when I was writing the articles and also taking the pictures for my double page spreads the reason for this being if a photograph was defaming someone or something.
Trespass
Trespassing did not really affect my product because I didn’t have to go on to any ones land to take photos or interview anyone so I did not have to get permission. This did mean though that I couldn’t go on to anyone’s land without permission if I needed to for my product. The reason that I did not have to consider this in production was because all the photography for my product was able to be affective when they are took in the studio.
Health and safety
This meant that I had to take health and safety precautions before using places like the studio, I created a risk assessment, which helped me take precautions for studio time, for example loose wires would be easy to trip over so I had to make sure they were not a hazard.

Copyright
This is where people who create something such as an article or take a photo can stop their work being stolen by other companies or individuals and using it for their own promotion, this meant that I couldn’t talk parts of an article or photos that other people had copyright on, the way I ensured I did this was by writing my own articles in my own style to suit the target audience and also taking my own photographs in the studio.

If I was working with teenagers or children I would have to get permission to work with them from their parents, this meant that I couldn’t publish something using their pictures without their consent, it also meant that the two teenagers I was using for my photo shoots had to give me permission to work with them, I did this by developing a model release form and consent form which allowed me to take photos of them and use their photos in my product.

Provide an explanation of how the Press Complaints Commission codes identified in (A) affected your production and the processes that you followed to complete your product.

Code

Affect.
What could/couldn’t you do? What subject matter could you follow? What subject matter couldn’t you include? What processes did you follow ensure compliance with the code?
1
Harassment - This meant that I couldn’t photograph, telephone or pursue individuals who asked me not to, this means that I could follow any subject matter but as long as I do not harass someone in the mean time, I did this by not putting anyone involved in the production of my product to the point where they told me to not get in contact with them.

2
Children - This meant that I could not interview or photograph anyone under the age of 16 without getting consent from a parent or guardian first, so I could publish any material I have gained from a child without consent from a parent or guardian. I made sure this code was not broken by not interviewing or photographing anyone under the age of 16 so there was no need to get parental consent.

3
Crime - This meant that if I was going to talk about crime in my product that I must not identify anyone related to the convicted e.g. friends or family. This meant that I couldn’t publish an article giving their name unless they were related to the actual crime. I did this by making sure I didn’t give anyone’s name in any of my articles unless I needed to.

4
Discrimination - I couldn’t make any prejudicial comments about an individual or organisation, this could be towards their race, skin colour, gender or sexual orientation, they should have all been avoided unless they were relevant to the story. I avoided this by making sure I did not reveal any of this information because none of it was relevant to the actual article.

5
Opportunity to reply - This means that I must give the audience/ public their chance to reply as I may make a mistake in the article or publish some material that is not true, or something that is not a true reflection on the real events. I did this by leaving an email address on my contents page which the audience could contact if a mistake was made during production.

Provide an explanation of how YOUR CLient affected the ETHICAL direction of your production and the processes that you followed to complete your product.

Area of discussion
Explanation
Championing of the North East
My client was the Northern Echo and because they are the champion of north east newspaper publication that means I should include a lot of content which will help relate to the north east and the north east only, as this will help the audience realise that the product is especially for them which will hopefully make them feel special that they get a high level of content rather than any other regions having it and that help to create a good relationship with the audience which is what my client demands of my product.

Local Accountability
I will need to take into account that this will be going out locally which means that I should have local representations in my product, although I didn’t do this as it is quite hard to involve pictures that can relate to the north east in a magazine when the main genre of it is being gaming, although I could have fit it in a lifestyle article I did not believe that it was needed for my audience to confirm this as an effective product.

Campaigning ethos
I was trying to lead a campaign in one of my article to why girl gamers are not what they are stereotypically made out to be, a reason why I did this was to try and bring in a new audience that would not only stick with that article but come in for a long period of time as they would feel comfortable and friendly with my product as it supports their beliefs.

Northern Echo’s audience
The Northern Echo has a good relationship with its target audience which is North East readers, and that meant that I had to keep a good relationship with my readers as well, I did this by keeping a friendly narrative voice towards my reader and also including local terminology in my article so that the readers are able to relate to my product, and also it creates a relationship between me the writer and the audience.
Journalistic Integrity
In my article I did portray some beliefs of my own although that was just a way of trying to get my point over to the audience and trying to get them to see the matter in a different light, for example when I was writing the ‘Girl Gamer’ article I was talking about stereotypes that girl gamers are faced with in life, I was trying dissemble each of these stereotypes to see where they came from and why they were not true to try and create an effective article.

Risk Assessment

Hazard: Cables
What could cause harm? – My model or staff could fall or trip over the cables that are there either for the camera itself or for the soft box etc.
What is the likelihood of this happening? – The likely hood of this happening could be quite high depending on the amount of wires on the floor.
How much harm? – Even though the likely hood of this happening is quite high I don’t believe that it could cause serious harm to anyone unless they land awkwardly.
Apply the following priorities, how will this risk be managed (provide detail)?
(1) Eliminate. (2) Reduce or substitute (3) Isolate. (4) Control. (5) Personal protective equipment

Hazard: Slipping, tripping or falling
What could cause harm? – One of the people involved in the photo-shoot could fall over anything that is on the floor, or they could just slip over a wet floor.
What is the likelihood of this happening? – The likely hood of this happening is not very high as I will make sure when I go into the photo-shoot that there is no tripping hazards on the floor.
How much harm? – If this did happen there is a chance of it causing serious harm to someone but the odds of it causing serious harm is not very high.
Apply the following priorities, how will this risk be managed (provide detail)?
(1)Eliminate. (2) Reduce or substitute (3) Isolate. (4) Control. (5) Personal protective equipment

Hazard: Lighting
What could cause harm? - The lighting could be too bright and it may get into the models eyes resulting in them falling over something, or it could even damage their eyes
What is the likelihood of this happening? - The likelihood of this happening is not very high but I will still make sure that the model is out of the way when first testing the lighting.
How much harm? - If this did happen it could results in the model falling over something and possibly spraining/ breaking something, or it could cause damage to the eyes.
Apply the following priorities, how will this risk be managed (provide detail)?
(1) Eliminate. (2) Reduce or substitute (3) Isolate. (4) Control. (5) Personal protective equipment

Monitoring log 2nd- 7th Feb

This week according to my schedule I had to start making the layout for my girl gamer article, I did not do this put instead I started making the layout for my 'Top 5 Games 2013' article' as I was not able to do the Girl Gamer article as the model that I was going to use for my photo shoot this week for my Girl Gamer article turned up late and there was simply not enough time for me to get all the shots done that I needed, it was for the same photo shoot that I had to cancel last week as the model was ill so I have to rebook the photo shoot for next Monday with another new model. This week I completed the layout for my Top 5 article so I just need to put the article in when it is done on Monday.

Again nothing really went smoothly this week really I wanted to keep to my schedule this week but I couldn't as my model did not turn up and if they did I would have been able to keep to my schedule but as the model did not turn up that means I had to change everything I was planning to do this week. This week I did use contingency planning as my model turned up late for the photo shoot so I had to refer to my contingency plan, but as it was a bit short notice the only thing I could do was book another photo shoot.

In my production this week I have not learnt anything new but just the same as last week I am getting back to knowing everything on photoshop and InDesign such as what tools are and what they do. I don't think my client would be very impressed with my progress this week as I have not done much although I am not blaming it on my photo shoot I should have been more prepared for this to happen, I think they would like that I have actually made progress but I think they would have liked me to have done more that what I have done.

I am beginning to get a bit worried about my product just simply because I am lacking behind on the photography stage as I need to get some photos took but once I get them photos took and edited I believe I will be able to start to relax.

Weekly monitoring log - Jan 27th-31st

According to my schedule this week I should have finished writing the rest of my articles which were the girl gamer and top 5 games 2014 articles and also I should have started making amendments to my double page spread that I did earlier in the year. This week I have written one of the articles which is the girl gamer article I only wrote this article because it was the easier one to write out of the two and I have not been able to give the top 5 games of 2013 article the thought it needs, as it will take research so I know what my audience will want to see in the countdown.

This week in class I have focused on improving my double page spread from the beginning of the year I have struggled with this as I didn't really know how to improve so I had to refer to the focus group feedback I got on the double page spread towards the beginning of the year. This week I have had to use contingency planning as I was meant to do my photo shoot on wednesday but my model was ill so she was not able to do it as she was off for the whole week, I had to refer to my contingency plan here as I had to find a back up model which I did and I have booked a new photo shoot for next week with a new model.

This week I have not learnt anything new but I have been getting used to photoshop and Indesign again as I forget how to use it and forget about some of the tools in the programmes if I have not used them for a while, I think this week my client would be happy with my progress this week as I have near enough finished one of my double page spreads which was the one I was improving this week and I think they would like the fact that I have finished one of dps's.

I am not worried about my work progress I mean I do have a lot of work to do but I feel like I am able to do it if I put my head down and get it done.
